Been wanting to get a photo of this joint for years and found myself walking past it, camera in hand on New Year’s Eve. Barrel House Liquor, Washington DC.
“The Club Is Open.” A line from the song A Salty Salute by Guided by Voices. The original neon sign (it’s been repaired/replaced due to breakage at least once) was given to lead singer and gang leader Bob Pollard on the occasion of his 40th birthday by the fine folks on the Postal Blowfish email list.

This is the joint where they put the fries and slaw right on the sandwich, as seen on every “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” show and its various knockoffs. Often seen during a Steelers Monday Night Football game also. Here’s why they do it that way.
