It was weird going back to Pittsburgh and seeing the Civic Arena turned red; the metal roof had been taken off to be turned into commemorative ornaments. A lot of great times were had in that building.
Its performance in the movie Sudden Death is far better than Jean-Claude Van Damme’s, but not as good as Powers Boothe’s.

In honor of Sidney Crosby’s return to the ice tonight, an old shot from a game against the Red Wings in January 2010. The Penguins’ official website did a nice tribute here. He’s not played since January 2011… and he scored 2 goals and notched an assist in his comeback tonight against the Islanders.

January 31, 2010. Got to visit my beloved Penguins in their home arena, the Igloo, one last time.
This has been the only home for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, and this home is meeting its end after this season. The Penguins will be moving across the street to their new home, the uber-generic “Consol Energy Center.”
Informally known as “The Igloo,” it was originally designed as a home for the Civic Light Opera, and the roof is retractable (see demo here) so that the CLO could host opera under the stars. Edgar Kaufmann, the department store magnate who had architect Frank Lloyd Wright build Fallingwater for their family vacation home, helped get this building built for the city.
To see more of this building in action, rent the (admittedly terrible) Jean Claude Van Damme film, Sudden Death, in which terrorists take over the Stanley Cup Finals and kidnap (wait for it!) the Vice President.
Went to a lot of games and concerts here, and even was in it once when the roof was open, for - of all things - a rollerhockey league game. Am very sad to see it go.
**CoRRECTION/UPDATE***
